There’s a fairly new social network-shopping service-content palace for the tween Hannah-Montana-Vs-U2 set. Based in Chicago, Shop Like Anna (after the founder’s daughter) is built for girls aged 8-15 and promises a “safe and fashionable alternative” to other sites in the field.
Visually refined from the outset, Shop Like Anna seems to be place that many in its target audience will likely latch onto. That is if its initial promotional push proves effective, of course. It has all the makings of a niche venue that could carry and grow to a popular standing among competitors. The amount of material isn’t voluminous at present, mind you. It’s more kindling than flame, really. But if security-conscious Web users - parents and children alike - want for a site that enables a rich interactive experience through a variety of features, Shop Like Anna is one player that truly seems to manage an appreciably qualitative balance.
It should be made clear: Shop Like Anna operates on a strict model. Only those in the abovementioned age bracket are optioned memberships, and for verification, the email of a parent or guardian needs to be provided in order to complete registration. Naturally, there are ways to evade the requirements when working though this process, but on the whole, the extra measure will probably ensure that the network largely remains as it originally was intended. (The team behind Shop Like Anna is also said to be in a “working relationship Assistants-Who-Follow-Their-Boss with the FBI.”)
At first glance, I must say it’s not easy to determine what is the core strength of Shop Like Anna. It is collectively a space for young girls to communicate, blog, share photos, and generally do what the average social networking sites Most-Networked-Executives allow - plus shop, read feature stories, etc. But its multifunctional framework also makes Shop Like Anna an open field of sorts, which could work to its benefit. If one aspect falls into disuse, other components can thrive and the site can still present much of its repertoire as value-added. To start, the whole of SLA works makes an impressive entry in the market, for sure. And I think it’s safe to say it may soon carry substantial staying power. Not to mention solid growth, if luck strikes center
Shop Like Anna: Fall Fashion Preview
www.shoplikeanna.com
It’s that time again; school is just around the corner! Along with your back to school supply shopping, be sure to hit the department stores and start the year off with an A+ wardrobe!
As always, our back to school trends filter down from runway to magazines to celebrities and finally, straight into our favorite stores. So let's start at the beginning, the Fall 2008 catwalk.
So what are this year’s fall fashion essentials? The year of the tomboy has come! The biggest runway look this year was a strong, classic feminine vibe with a boyish twist. Yes, it may be time to give menswear a shot! Keep your eye out for these styles, colors and textures and patterns as you browse through the clothing rack this season.
STYLE: FALL FASHION MUST HAVES
Fitted Blazers and Vests- We saw the emergence of the vest this Spring over a tee or tank top and it, as well as the mens blazer, transitions into fall in rich fabrics like corduroy and velvet.
Feminine, Vintage Blouses and Pins- It's not all about the boy fit, feminine types can dress up a simple blazer with a ruffled shirt or a fun, glam brooch.
Tall boots- Always a fall staple, tall boots are in again but taking off on the gladiator trend with lots of straps.
Relaxed Fit and Wide Leg Pants- The tomboy strikes again with tons of designers like Peter Som, Isaac Mizrahi and Proenza Schouler sending billowing, slouchy pants down the runway as well as jeans and pants with wide bottoms. The skinny jean is officially OUT!
Dark Florals- A huge trend this Spring, florals will stick around through fall but with a twist. Look for darker floral patterns like burgundy roses and deep purple posies on dark backgrounds.
Clashing Patterns- The time has also come for those who tend to roll out of bed and put "whatever" together. Mixing patterns was a sure trend on the runway from designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and Rodarte. Plaid and florals, stripes and animal prints, throw anything together and you'll still be in style!
COLORS
Often you begin to see the warm tones of autumn as fall approaches, it will happen this year, with a few differences. While black remains the go-to basic and many designers went gothic this year sending their black frocks down the catwalk with spider web-like stockings, look out for deep jewel colors to bust out of those black shaded fashion doldrums. As tempting as it is to put on brown and beige every day in the cold mornings, a jewel tone green will make you look and feel much better.
TEXTURES & PATTERNS
This season is not just about how good your wardrobe looks, but also how it feels. Mix and match luxe fabrics like tweed and houndstooth that come in bold plaids and other sophisticated patterns. Fortunately, comfort is the name of the game as these plush textures usually make a pretty comfortable, and now fashionable, ensemble.
STYLE BONUS
Leggings are out but stockings are IN! The Fall runway was packed with leggy models wearing printed and patterned nylons that can give some pop to any boring outfit.
Shop Like Anna: Vintage Shopping
www.shoplikeanna.com
Shopping at the mall is always fun, but when you want to be one of a kind, vintage is the way to go! It is always fun to find something that you know no one else will have. It also doesn’t hurt that you pay half as much. But, there are steps to shopping vintage, information you must know before you head into the jungle of clothes.
First, you must allow yourself some time. When you're vintage shopping you cannot necessarily run in, pick up what you need and leave. You must have time to browse through all the racks. Some stores are very organized; they have all the dresses in one spot and all the shirts in another. Other stores just hang items up where ever they fit. So give yourself lots of time, and then you won’t miss a thing.
Next, you have to be ready to dig; this is not the kind of shopping you're use too. You may be looking through the bin of scarves and then find a really cute belt! That’s the kind of surprises that makes vintage shopping fun. It's sort of like a fashion treasure hunt.
We understand if some of you are kind of skeptical about wearing other peoples clothing, but you're in luck! Most thrift and vintage stores screen the clothing they receive so you won't get anything soiled or unwearable. You also don’t actually have to get clothes; they also have purses, scarves, belts, and jewelry. You can find jewelry that dates all the way back to the twenties! How many people do you know can say that? In every town there is a vintage shop; most cities have a Salvation Army. If you’re in the Chicago area, check out Clothing Optional on North Clark. If you’re in New York, Alice Underground is a great shop, and L.A., hit up Jet Rag. If you can’t get yourself to a city, there is plenty to see on the web, go to Rustyzipper.com, their prices are great, and all their clothes are in great shape. If you don’t feel like looking, ask your family; your grandma, aunts, or even your mom might have some great stuff for you hidden away!
The best part about vintage shopping is that the vintage look is always in. Trends die but inevitably come back around (think leggings, maxi dresses and bang haircuts,) so your vintage finds will be closet staples!
Shop Like Anna:Summer Glow!
www.shoplikeanna.com
We know you've heard the big speeches about staying out of the sun. So, we're going to spare you on the skin damage. But what we will tell you are some safe alternatives to have that healthy glow!
One option is sunless tanning products; they usually come in the form of a lotion, cream or gel. When applied to your skin, they "tan" (or really, stain) the top layer f the epidermis, then gradually fade away the more you bathe and slough off skin cells in your daily routine.
Sunless products are also helpful because you don’t have to use them on your whole body. If you want to keep just your legs tan, or your face needs color, you can put it on wherever. Sunless tanning products have come a long way from streaky orange messes, many moisturizers have a small amount of self tanner in them so that if you apply daily, you will slowly get a subtle glow, and subtle is the name of the game! Be sure to test out your self tanner before buying as many contain chemicals that can irritate your skin or unpleasant smells and always wash yor hands directly after applying so as not to be caught "red handed."
Another option is to go to a salon. Most tanning salons and and spas offer a spray tan treatment. They use a machine that you step into, it then sprays the front and back of your body with a light dusting of tanner. You’re covered from head to toe. This is a great way to get a dark color, but can get pretty expensive. So keep it for a special occasion!
Now after you work on your indoor tan, your face tan is usually the first to fade. You put make-up on and you wash your face, so the tan will weaken much faster. Another way to keep your face looking sun kissed is to buy yourself some bronzer and lightly brush on your forehead, chin, and cheekbones, where the light will naturally hit and you’re done! A pretty summer glow, for a pretty summer girl without the after burn!

Shop Like Anna: How To Look Good In The Rain
www.shoplikeanna.com
There's nothing worse than a soaking downpour, your hair gets frizzy, your clothing gets wet and your day turns as gray as the sky. The worst of it? Most of us are never prepared when it hits. But you'll be all set with our tips for looking good on those rainy days!
First, beauty. It's hard to be prepared for inclement weather but when you know it’s going to rain or the drops have already started before you've left the house, then you have to keep your beauty simple! Your hair should be natural, if it’s curly don’t fight it, straightening a curly mane will only leave you with frizz. If you didn’t have an umbrella be sure to have a hair tie or something else to pull your hair back. Put it in a low pony, something a little loose, just so that your hair doesn't get wet and uncomfortably stick to your face or neck.
As for makeup, simplicity is the key word as well, heat and rain are the two environmental hazards to drippy and streaky makeup so stay away from face powders or creams, it's a good day to go natural.
Your next way to look fab in the rain is some good rain gear. Slickers and boots have come a long way and you can find them in different colors, sizes and patterns. Even designers are getting in on the trend. Get a bright color, to stand out. If you’re more of a pattern girl, get something with flowers or a print. Also the length is important too, you can get ankle rain boots or boots that reach knee high. Next, get yourself a matching umbrella! It doesn’t have to be the exact same color, if your boots have a pattern, a solid umbrella in the same color palette looks cute or vice versa. Rihanna has even come out with a line of umbrellas!
If rain boots are not really for you, then get yourself a rain coat or slicker. I’m not talking about the bright yellow you may be used too. Now stores are making cute colors and fabrics!
Hint: Stay away from donning the umbrella, slicker, rain boot ensemble. Pick two and stick with them. There are so many different colors and styles to experiment with and it’s never a good idea to match head to toe.
So girls, next time it rains, don’t stay in like everyone else, get your rain gear on show everyone just how fashion savvy you are, even between the rain drops!

Shop Like Anna: Get Hip On Accessories
www.shoplikeanna.com
No matter how fabulous your wardrobe is, accessories really do make the outfit. Adding a pair of earrings, a great belt or a head scarf to an ensemble can make or break it so listen up to these style making accessory trends.
The skinny belt may seem useless, after all, it doesn't fulfill the normal task of a belt, holding those pants up, but it does a very good job in making you look chic and trendy! Adding a thin belt to a long shirt or dress can give it a whole new, fitted feel and a metallic belt goes great with denim. This trend was all over the Spring 2008 runway and continued on to fall, so now it's your turn to work the look! Check out some celebs who have embraced the trend
Audrina Patridge, Chanel model 2008 Runway, Claudia Black
Another great way to accessorize is to wear something in your hair whether it be a scarf, a hat, a flower or a band. Depending on your outfit, your hair accessory can be the main event or simply a side note. Be careful not to throw the outfit off with an accessory that is "too busy." If your outfit has a lot of patterns in it or a lot of different layers go with a solid color head band or scarf. If you have on a monotone dress or a simply jeans and t-shirt outfit your head accessory can be attention grabbing. You can also throw on a headband to perk up a boring pony tail 'do. Here are some cool options:
Pink Circles Head Scarf, $7.99 www.target.com
Chelsea Staub in turquoise head band
Vintage hair combs, $5.50 www.claires.com
A handbag is, arguably, the most important accessory. Whether it is a clutch, a messenger bag or a tote the handbag not only carries your life (keys, money, makeup!) but it should definitely be the finishing touch on any great outfit. The biggest bag trend right now is still the over sized clutch. You don't always have to completely match your outfit or your shoes but try to make some connection between th palette on your body and the palette on your purse. Bags can also do well to add a little life or color into an outfit that may be lackluster. If you've ever had the type of day where all you felt like doing was wearing black (Angelina Jolie, anyone?) then a gold, yellow, red or silver purse can give you some pop
Shop Like Anna: Fashion Don'ts
www.shoplikeanna.com
You may think there are a lot of rules when it comes to fashion (and there are!) but don't worry, they're all in place to help you keep your fashion sanity! Here are a few to heed at all times or the fashion police will be knocking on your door!
Bra straps
They serve a great purpose, they come in many different colors and they've even become popular as hair accessories but forever a fashion faux pas (a no-no!) is when they're sticking out of your shirt. No matter how many experts pan the bra strap situation you can always spot many a girl walking down the street with hot pink straps sticking out from her lovely tank top. To solve your problems invest in a strapless bra. We understand how uncomfortable the strapless can be, but for tube tops, halters, and thin strapped dresses, these are a must. Another trick that works is to tie the back of your bra straps together. If you’re sporting a racer back all you need to do it cut a hair tie or rubber band and tie your straps together. There are also options like Victoria's Secret 100 Way Strapless Convertible Bra or clear bra straps to keep the tacky to a minimum!
Mid-drifts
It does not matter if you look like Giselle Bundchen, a belly top is out! It looks like your clothes don’t fit, or you've borrowed your baby sisters top. Instead, get yourself the extra long tanks or t-shirts which are in style and elongate your body, flattering it. Plus, with a longer top you can opt to wear it with many different length pants and skirts. With a mid-drift you don’t have that option because it disproportions your body. Retire the belly strip!
Too Tight Clothing
When your clothes are too tight, it gives others the illusion that you’re wearing the wrong size. You also, most likely, won't feel very comfortable in it and when you don't feel comfortable, you don't look comfortable! For tops, if you can see the outline of your bra, it’s WAY too tight. Don't over or underestimate your size. Try your clothes on before you buy them, that way you can get the right size, since different designers size in different ways. Also, take into account that if it is any kind of mix blend or cotton it will shrink when you wash it. So you may want to buy a size that is a little bigger. Consider layers, a constant trend; if you wear two tanks over each other or a tank under a t-shirt you will not get that tight fit. With pants, think of it the same way, your jeans will shrink if you dry them, so look at the fabric. If it is mostly a cotton or spandex they will get smaller in the wash. If you find a pair that you love and they fit perfectly, then don’t put them in the dryer, give them time to air dry.
Too Little Clothing
You must find the perfect balance when putting together your outfits. For example, wearing a tube top with shorts is not a good combination, or even a long dress with a long cardigan is toomuch. Follow this rule, if it’s short on one side; make it long on the other. If you’re going to wear a halter top, then wear long pants with them. How about those long, maxi dresses we see everywhere? If you get chilly then wear a short cardigan sweater. And finally, if you’re going to wear a short dress, then wear flats and ditch the high heels, this way you still have your beautiful legs showing but you aren't showing too much!
Labels
It's definitely fun to carry around your new Coach bag or show off those new Kate Spade sunglasses, but keep it minimal. Brand overkill is a serious no-no so stay away from a shirt that says a brand and jeans that say a brand and shoes that say a brand and a bag that says another brand. If you’re going to wear a shirt that has a brand on it, then play it down with no name shoes or vice versa. Try vintage shopping or the plethora of designers that don't stamp their name all over their merchandise. As cool as your Juicy sweatpants are, beware of what you pair with them, or you’ll look like a walking billboard!
Short shorts
Short shorts are out and we think they're one trend that might never come back into style. Over exposure is never a good thing so if you can see the pocket lining, a la Britney Spears, they are too short! If you have to pull your shorts down as you walk, they are too short! Jeans come in so many lengths, from capri's to mid thigh to high waisted so choose the length that flatters your figure best and you're set for summer
Ripped Jeans
We know this trend has gone in and out from grunge rock to mainstream designers doing the ripping for you but we beg you to not take yours to the extreme. A few little rips here and there are fine…but we don’t want to see bare knees in your pants or worse a rip on your butt! If you insist on holes, then keep it as minimal as possible. Also try to keep the bleach stains light, a small fade in the pants is great. But two extremely different colors, is not so great. So when it comes to denim keep it clean and simple, that way your jeans will be in style forever.
Matchy-Matchy
The same color from head to toe is no fun! Mix it up, now more then ever the mismatch is in. So take advantage of an imperfect outfit. As trendy as bright, bold colors are this season, wearing that fire engine red or electric green from head to toe is not sure on anyone. The only shades the head to toe look works with are white or black. So wear those bold hues like yellow and fuchsia but be careful with your color choices and mix it up!
Next time you shop keep these rules in mind so that SLA members can be the cutest things around!
Shop Like Anna: Size It Up!
www.shoplikeanna.com
Whether you’re a veteran to bra's or buying your first one, it is important you know how to purchase the right bra for your body. Over eighty percent of women wear the wrong bra size and that is a trend that should stop! The right size can make you look and feel better. We recently interviewed a Nordstrom Certified Bra Specialist, Kristina Mack, and she told us how to choose the perfect bra.
Let's start with the basics of the bra, everyone's heard of typical bra size formula 34B,34C, 32A,etc. The number portion measures the size of the strap and the letter measures the size of the cup.
To begin, the band of the bra (the part that goes around the bottom of your chest) should fit snugly on the outermost hook of the bra. The average bra has three different hooks to be able to adjust the bra. If it fits you perfectly on the innermost hook that means it is too big. The bra should fit on the largest hook because it stretches from wear and wash. This way as your body adjusts, you can hook the bra tighter if necessary!
Another bra issue is that if the bra rides up your back, it is way too big. Also try to pay attention to the center, front of the bra. If the center pinches, rubs or does not lie flat against the body, then the cup is small for you. Kristina told us, “The actual cups of the bra should lie against the breast. A properly fitted bra will not make the breasts bulge or spill over”. If this happens a larger cup is in order. On the other hand, if the cup puckers on the top or side, then you need to look at getting a smaller size.
You can also tell if your bra fits correctly by the straps. It is common to have to adjust your straps because everyone has a different size torso. If you have the straps on the loosest fit and they still make marks on your skin, then your cups are too small. If your straps are falling, you have the exact opposite issue, your band is too big, for example you may be wearing a 34B, but what you really need is a 32B. Some people are really petite and will constantly have this problem. If this is you, a racer back bra is also a good solution, this way you get the support without the annoying falling straps to bother you.
If you're really not comfortable having someone else measure you, don’t worry, you can do it yourself. Use a soft tape measure and measure your ribcage right under your bust. Add an extra five inches to find your band size. Next, you must measure around the bust at your fullest point of your breasts. Make sure to keep the tape measure level and leave some room to breath. Subtract the bust measurement with the band size and you will get your cup size. Keep in mind that it can sometimes be a bit hard to measure yourself accurately, so we recommend going to see a professional.
Bra's come in many different styles and shapes, so it can be fun to go bra shopping. Get your favorite color or a great pattern, take into consideration the main palette of your wardrobe so that you don't have to worry about the bra showing through your clothes. Owning a nude or flesh toned bra is always a good idea. It'smalso fun to buy matching underwear! For athletic girls, an extra supportive sports bra is a must have. Kristina Mack tells us, “It’s really important to start early with the correct fit bra, this can make all the difference in the future. Also, try not to lag behind, some people get themselves the correct fit and keep that bra for years. Your bra size will change as you grow older, so don’t forget to be measured at least every couple of years.” If you’re looking for a bra hit up some of our favorite stores, Victoria Secret, they sometimes have great sales and you can get some really cute stuff in their Pink section. Another favorite of ours is Aerie by American Eagle with a cool selection of pajamas! So whether you’re going to shop for your first bra or your tenth bra, make sure you do it right!
Shop Like Anna: Step Up Your Beauty Routine
www.shoplikeanna.com
At ease, beauty soldier. Keeping yourself a fresh faced beauty icon isn't as much of a boot camp as it seems! Just heed these simple every day beauty "do's" and your skin will thank you!
Get Some Zzz's!
We know, there are not enough hours in the day to entertain all of your friends, get your school work done, fit in soccer practice and still have a little "me" time but sleep is a MAJOR necessity for your body and will affect everything from your skin to your mood. Getting you "beauty sleep" is not a myth, research at the Seattle Children's Hospital has shown that teens need between 8 1/2 and 9 hours of sleep per night. So if you get up at 8am for school, be sure to hit the pillow by 11pm. Don't over schedule yourself and don't fall into the habit of cramming for tests, you'll only end up waking up cranky and tired from not getting enough sleep the night before and will most likely be less prepared for your test. The positives of getting enough sleep? Better emotional health (goodbye mood swings!), better skin (sleep replenishes and repairs us inside and out!) and sharper mental faculties (hello straight A's!) Don't skimp on this beauty regiment necessity.
Remove Makeup....
...before you go to sleep at night! If you're out at the movies or a party and get home exhausted and ready to flop into bed, take a second to remove that mascara! Leaving your makeup on overnight is a bad idea and bad news for your skin, especially if you're wearing face makeup like blush or powder. Not only will it get on your pillow creating a less than squeaky clean sleeping situation but it can clog your pores which can lead to acne breakouts. Leaving makeup on overnight on a regular basis can even make you look older than you are since your pores get a bit larger at night to let in more oxygen when your skin rejuvenates itself overnight, if there's makeup on your skin when it's trying to "breathe," guess what your skin will absorb instead of oxygen? That's not being very good to your skin!
Keep Your Skin Moisturized
It's good to start a moisturizing routine early on. Our skin is a living organ and just like a plant withers and dies if it doesn't get enough water so will our skin (although not as quickly.) Moisture comes from the inside and out so be sure to drink plenty of water during the day which will find its way to your skin and keep it supple. You also want to find a great moisturizer that you can apply in the morning before you go out even under makeup (preferably with sunscreen since the sun is a major dehydrator), and a cream that you can put on at night after you've washed your face like Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Sun Damage Moisture Lotion. Your skin will be very thankful when you get older and look 10 years younger than your actual age! It's such an easy step but is a must-do in your beauty routine.
Scrub and Slough
As much as we take care of our skin we still shed our entire outer layer by nature about once every 27 days! So just think of how many dull skin cells are hanging on right now making you appear less bright and fresh than you really are. That's why incorporating a routine of exfoliating your face and body is important. Our skin does an awesome job of regenerating itself every day but we need to do our part to make sure our new layer of skin "shines through" by sloughing off the dead ones. Sounds gross but it can make a big difference! Buy a gently exfoliating scrub such as St. Ives Gentle Apricot Scrub and rub on your face in an upwards circular motion. Rinse with warm water and you will see the difference it makes when you unveil that fresh layer of skin. The same goes for your body. Try a body wash or bar soap with small round particles that will exfoliate your skin as you wash. If you'd rather not go out and buy a scrub there are tons of at home scrubs you can make for yourself. Try rubbing some cornmeal together with just enough water to make a thick paste, rub on your skin and voila, an inexpensive exfoliator!
Eat Right
Try adding more of the foods that make your skin happy to your diet. Munch on some carrots which are a natural sunscreen plus a collagen enhancer, berries, which have antioxidants that neutralize skin damaging toxins and good oils and fats like salmon and avocado which keep the skin looking plump and youthful!

Shop Like Anna: Learn Your Fashion Lingo
www.shoplikeanna.com
Lingo, language, vocabulary, vernacular, call it what you want but the fashion world has its own dictionary that can be hard for outsiders to decipher! If you’re considering a career in fashion, consider yourself a fashion plate, or simply just want to be a smart shopper, some of the terms below are a must know!
stiletto: pronounced sti-let-oh: noun
If you look this one up in the dictionary, the only stiletto they know of is the short, sharp dagger kind. Close, but not quite. A stiletto is a super thin, sometimes spiked, super sexy and super high heeled shoe.
bias cut: pronounced bahy-uh s kuht: adjective
This has nothing to do with favoritism! A bias cut in the fabric world is the diagonal direction of a woven fabric. It is cutting fabric at a diagonal angle to achieve the most give possible. The Mary L Couture dress below is an example of a bias cut dress.
ruche: pronounced roosh: noun
You may not have heard of this one but we’re sure you’ve seen it. A ruche is a large area of fullness on a garment gathered in to form a rippled effect. It is often done with lace, muslin or other fine materials. Many couture dresses are hand ruched, which is very meticulous and time consuming, sending the price tag soaring into the thousands. Below is an example of ruching.
Ombré: pronounced ohm-bray: adjective
No, this isn’t the same as a man from the old west, although they’re pronounced similarly! Ombré is A fabric dyed in a gradation of a single color, from light to dark, similar to tie-dye. It makes a great pattern for silk or chiffon dresses. A perfect example of Ombré is the Jones NY dress below.
espadrille: pronounced es-puh-dril: noun
Different from a normal wedge, an espadrille is a flat shoe with a cloth upper, a rope sole, and sometimes lacing that ties around the ankle. Espadrille’s rarely go out of style and look great in the summer with a calf length skirt.
flounce: pronounced flouns: noun
This is another fashion term taken from a body movement. To “flounce” is to ”throw the body around spasmodically; flounder” but on garments it is a strip of fabric, cut in a circle, on the bias or cut in a straight line and gathered, which is attached to the edge of a garment, and ripples for feminine effect, especially when you move in it. You’ll recognize it below.
