Having soft, clear skin, silky, lustrous hair and bright, sparkling eyes doesn’t always mean a splurge at the salon or the drug store. There are plenty of masks, scrubs and creams you can make from ingredients right in your own home. Here’s how to get that fresh from the salon look without spending “fresh from the salon” money!

Eye Treatments
Eye treatments at salons and spa’s range up into the thousands, but if you struggle with puffy eyes or dark circles, there are some easy things you can do to minimize them.

Thinly slice some cool cucumber and spend 15 minutes relaxing with the slices over your eyes. Cucumber has astringent properties that will constrict blood vessels and tame your morning or mid day puffiness. This also lessens the appearance of dark circles.

Steep some tea bags in hot water, make sure the tea is caffeinated, like black or green. Cool the tea bags until warm to the touch and put them over your eyes. The caffeine will invigorate your eyes and constrict blood vessels.

Drink lots of water! When your body isn’t getting enough water it goes into conservation mode and stores whatever water it has. This causes water retention which not only causes bloating but can cause puffy eyes as well. As odd as it may sound, if you drink more water, you’ll retain less in your body.

Scrubs and Masks
Facial scrubs and masks can be bought for anywhere from $4-$200 but it’s better to save your cash and make them yourself with some simple ingredients that can work wonders for your skin.

Combine 2 teaspoons of fine oatmeal and a teaspoon of baking soda with enough water to make a paste. Rub gently into skin in an upwards motion.

Mash up an avocado and apply it to face and neck, leave on for 10 minutes and gently remove. (This is not recommended if you have oily skin.)

Mix together 1 tablespoon of honey, an egg yolk, ½ teaspoon of almond oil and a tablespoon of yogurt, apply to face and leave for 10 minutes, these elements will smooth, moisturize and tighten.

Mash up ¼ of an apple, ½ teaspoon of half and half, 1 teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of oatmeal. Apply to face and leave for 10 minutes, dead skin cells will be banished!

Hair Treatments and Masks
Keeping your mane shiny, strong and luxurious is easiest when helped along by some moisturizing and nourishing masks and “good oils” like coconut and avocado. Here are a few to try at home.

For shiny hair mix the juice of a fresh orange, some water, a tablespoon of honey and about 5 drops of sandalwood oil. Use it after you shampoo.

Mix 2 eggs with 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Smooth through hair evenly and wrap in plastic, leave for 10 minutes then rinse thoroughly.

Vinegar and water don’t seem like the best mix for hair but if you mix them together (about 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 cup water) they will leave your hair as soft and shiny as its ever been!
